Alternative Health Care

What is the definition of alternative health care? Any medical or health practice that is based on unconventional, unscientific, and untested methods, knowledge, techniques, or principles is known as “alternative”. But not all alternative health care practices are believed to be equally or almost equally reliable as the conventional health care practices. Thus, such less efficient methods are known as quackery. But an alternative health care plan can work well if combined with conventional medicine. The resulting practice is then called complementary medicine.

People who are suffering from certain diseases like cancer often find themselves trying to piece together as much information as their brains can process. Indeed, there are too many facts that need to be gathered, understood, and used in order to come up with the right decisions. Information overload? Definitely. With numerous health care and treatment options these days, avoiding a disease is as challenging as surviving it.

Even if science has given people a lot of preventive and treatment options, more and more people are getting curious about alternative health care and treatments that do not follow along the mainstream. But the challenge remains. Finding reliable facts regarding complementary and alternative medicine or CAM can be more complicated than gathering information about the conventional treatment methods.

Complementary and alternative health care are mostly used by cancer patients as a way to enhance their overall well-being. Some patients use them to deal with certain symptoms that are associated with a particular disease and/or its treatment. Bu there are also a few people who attempt to use alternative methods as a primary cancer treatment.

Generally, the most popular purpose of alternative health care is to improve a person’s overall health. Wellness signifies is more than just the absence of a disease. It means reaching optimal health – physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional elements included. Majority of the alternative health care research done pointed out that this controversial health and treatment practice relies on the natural recuperative ability of the human body. It further stated that one’s innate healing power happens at the various physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional levels.

The use of alternative health care to deal with different symptoms of disease and treatments is another common occurrence. It includes a mind and body connection technique, and the use of neutraceutical or herbal methods to minimize symptoms. Some of the most prevalent symptoms treated with alternative means include hot flushes, pain, and nausea.

Lastly, alternative health care is being used by a few cancer patients as a treatment option for their disease. These people either choose these alternative techniques along with traditional treatment options, or instead of the traditional ones. This particular purpose is obviously the most controversial use of alternative methods.

Complementary and alternative health care encompass a wide range of treatment methods, principles, and approaches. It has been commonly known as the types of treatments and health practices that are not extensively discussed in med schools, very rarely used in health care facilities or hospitals, and not covered by majority of medical insurance organizations. However, we are all seeing drastic changes nowadays.

Currently, the use of complementary and/or alternative health care and treatment schemes are starting to become very popular among people with cancer, particularly those with breast cancer. In fact, studies revealed that about 48% to 70% of all breast cancer patients use these unconventional methods.

Despite skepticisms, complementary and alternative practices remain to be a thriving area of health care, especially among patients with breast cancer. And since science has not come up with a particular “wonder drug” for such disease, alternative remedies may just as well try providing patients with one more shot at life.
