Breast Augmentation

The breasts can provide women with all the confidence she wants or can altogether destroy whatever little faith she has on herself. Hence, breast augmentation remains to be one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries available today.

Although breast enhancement has become as some sort of a fashion trend among women, the choice should be a personal preference. As soon as a woman commits to the decision of undergoing such procedure, it is crucial that she knows which implant is best for her.

Breast implants are divided into two “filling” types: silicone breast implants, and saline breast implants. The first type is filled with silicone gel, while the other type is filled with a sterile solution of salt water. The saline breast implants are more often used than silicone because it is known to be totally safe. Once the implant is ruptured, the sterile solution is absorbed by the body. Breast augmentation using this type of implant may require smaller incisions since the solution may be added to the implant after it has been positioned in the breast.

Breast augmentation using the silicone breast implants would necessitate larger incisions since these implants are always pre-filled. Currently, cohesive gel are used to fill these implants so that when they rupture inside the beasts, the gel will merely stick to itself. Breast enhancement using silicone implants can only be done by surgeon who are participants of the cohesive gel silicone breast implant surveys.

Shape is another element f breast enhancement. Contoured implants are those shaped like tear drops and are replicas of the natural breast shape. The surgeon needs to make an exact incision to prevent any type of movement from the implant when inside the breast. Since the tear shaped implants get easily distorted when there is space for movement, the globe or round implants are chosen more often because they do not get distorted as they are designed to move about freely.

Texture is another basis for choice. Your breast implants may either be smooth or textured, depending on their purpose. The smooth breast implants are designed with such texture to allow them to move unobstructed within their pockets. The textured breast implants have surfaces that are roughed up so that they would not make too many movements when in position.

The incisions made during breast augmentation may be done in four places: Transaxillary or armpit incision; areola or nipple incision; inframammary fold or crease incision; TUBA or transumbilical, navel, or belly button incision. The incision which results in the thinnest scar is almost always the one made in the areola. The TUBA or umbilical incision makes use an endoscope to guide the placement of the implant.

A with any type of surgery, breast augmentation or breast enlargement comes with some risks. Capsular contracture is the most common among all known side effect of the procedure. This can be described as the tightening of the scar around the implant which causes the breast to tighten and feel hard. This particular side effect may be dealt with by removing and replacing the implant. Experts have found out though, that the likelihood of capsular contracture may be minimized by treating implants with antibacterial agents before surgery.

There are other side effects caused by breast implants, which include: infection, presence of calcium deposits around the implant, seroma or hematoma, delayed healing, implant shifting, changes in nipple or breast sensation that may either be temporary or permanent.

Breast augmentation is not an inexpensive procedure. But if it works to increase a person’s confidence level which will make her obtain a better quality of life, then the cost shouldn’t be too much of a concern.
