Breastfeeding In Public

Mothers, who choose not to breastfeed or have stopped doing it, point out several reasons. But just how many of them admit that they are not comfortable about breastfeeding in public?

The thought alone is enough to make women uneasy. Unfortunately, feeling queasy about breastfeeding in public creates more serious problems. According to surveys, a lot of women are uncomfortable about nursing their babies in public and their discomfort for it is the main reason why most of them disrupt breastfeeding before it is even time to wean their babies.

No one can really blame these women for such sentiments. Because even if it has been proven that no other form of feeding is best for babies than breastfeeding, there are always people who continue to think that breastfeeding in public is the greatest social taboo.

Up to now, the Americans’ stand on public breastfeeding continue to be divided. Women who choose not to breastfeed are considered “bad” mothers. Those who do and are breastfeeding in public are likewise targets of criticisms. Men often show discomfort when a nursing mother is around. But other women are the greatest critics of all.

All mothers each have her comfort level when it comes to breastfeeding in public. Although breastfeeding advocates will fight critics to their graves about legalizing breast feeding in public, this issue will always have members on both sides.

Generally, breastfeeding in public is considered legal in the U.S. However, some people are not aware of this, causing them to complain about such incidences. There are around 20 states in the country that have passed a law for breast feeding in public. Such laws spell out the legality of such acts. The states that do not have the law should still consider breastfeeding in public as legal.

Aside from the legalization of public breastfeeding, other issues include giving women the right to express milk while at work. Mothers need not fear of being criticized or asked to leave when nursing their babies in public because they have all the right to do it. There are also support groups that women can turn to if they want to know how to deal with these matters.

Breastfeeding in public discreetly is an art – but a learned one at that. There are babies who make discreet nursing easy, but there are others who simply require lots of practice. You may make use of nursing blankets to avoid exposing yourself while breastfeeding. Practice nursing discreetly at home so that you will get the hang of it when you need to do it in public.

Invest in nursing clothes. There are clothes that have discreet holes specially designed for nursing mothers. You don’t really have to change everything inside your closet. But when you go out, avoid wearing one-piece attire. Choose separates – tops, jeans, shirts, and skirts. There are numerous great-looking and fashionable nursing tops that will go well with your usual wardrobe. A sling will also help you nurse your baby more discreetly. It is adjustable to shield you better and can leave your hands free as well.

Feed your baby at the first sign of hunger. Not all babies are the same, but you may well be aware of your infant’s hunger cues. Don’t put off feeding him. Babies who are very hungry tend to fuss and get hysterical. Breastfeeding in public discreetly won’t be possible anymore if your baby is throwing tantrums at you.

Just because you get hundreds of stares and dozens of disapproving comments do not mean that these are all reasons to stop giving your baby the breastfeeding he deserves. Stare back at them and don’t cower. After all, you are only carrying out a very loving and nurturing act.
