Breastfeeding Support

Most first-time mothers are finding it hard to get started on breastfeeding. Even if this is a pretty common issue, it still needs to be addressed properly because some mothers resort to bottle feeding if they feel that they are not breastfeeding right.

Majority of women are made to believe that their maternal instincts are supposed to come out right after giving birth. Although women may really be born with such instincts that guide them in child-rearing, these do not work to make them instant breastfeeding experts.

Generally, the reason why some mothers do not breastfeed or have stopped breastfeeding when it is still necessary is because they are not given the correct guidance. Breastfeeding entails a lot of great challenges, such as: low milk supply, poor latching, sore nipples, painful breasts, and other concerns. Experiencing one or more of these should not mean the end of your baby’s breastfeeding sessions. With breastfeeding support from health care providers and well-meaning friends and family, you are most likely going to become an expert breastfeeding mom in no time.

Even if you feel that you can hurdle all the challenges that come with breastfeeding, it is still crucial to find breast feeding support. It doesn’t necessarily have to be far-reaching. A one-on-one talk with a lactation consultant is going to be very useful in helping you achieve the proper breastfeeding techniques. In fact, a recent study done in a hospital in Singapore has found out that a single chat session with a lactation expert has helped newborn and their mothers obtain successful breastfeeding.

Mothers who feel that they need more than just the usual pats in the back and words of encouragement from family and friends may seek the help of various breastfeeding support groups. These can be important to women who are just learning the art of breastfeeding and would like to know if other mothers are going through the same issues as they are. Also, some of these breastfeeding support organizations are available to help those who are breastfeeding older babies.

The various breastfeeding support teams are mostly organized by midwives, health care practitioners, or voluntary groups such as La Leche League, the Breastfeeding Network, Association of Breastfeeding Mothers, and NCT.

Most of these breastfeeding support organizations are a joint effort of the various groups involved. Thus, if you feel that you need help getting started on breastfeeding, or you want advice with other breastfeeding-related problems, it is recommended that you find breastfeeding support group in your area.

Although it is common for mothers to look for a trained health care professional or a lactation specialist, there are those that prefer to go to the different breastfeeding support groups. These women feel that the mothers, who are going through the same things as they, are the most reliable persons to have discussions with.
A lot of these groups offer support free-of-charge. Some provide 24 hour breast feeding support via the phone. Groups, such as the Breastfeeding Network, do not generate income from the phone calls you make to them, nor do they profit financially for any assistance rendered.

Since most breastfeeding support organizations are put together by volunteers, some mothers are wary whether they are being funded by certain companies that sell baby goods. To make sure that you choose the support team that does not do marketing or advertising campaign for any company, study each of them well. Their helpdesk or support line should not expose you to any form of marketing scheme.

Sometimes, the only thing that mothers need is a little reassurance that women practically go through the same issues when breastfeeding. After all, breastfeeding is not an easy task.
